UTSF’s constitution and bylaws direct the Executive Council to appoint members to standing committees after union elections.
Filling those committees is a collective call to action. The union needs members’ time, judgment, experience, and ideas to create durable structures and carry out the work members assigned through the bylaws.
Except for the Finance Committee, each standing committee chooses its own chair and works with substantial independence. Committee chairs also serve on the UTSF Executive Board, giving each area of work a direct voice in union-wide decisions.
UTSF has five standing committees. At the time of this call, the Collective Bargaining Committee was the most urgent need, but every committee required member participation.
Collective Bargaining Committee
This committee plans and conducts bargaining sessions with MSU representatives. It analyzes bargaining strategy, develops position papers, and carries out assignments from the Executive Council. The initial committee disbands after the first contract has been ratified by both UTSF and MSU.
Grievance Committee
The Grievance Committee maintains grievance records, supervises grievances, and works to ensure bargaining-unit members receive full representation in both informal resolutions and formal procedures. It keeps the Executive Council informed about contract enforcement and meets at least once each academic semester to discuss enforcement concerns.
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee organizes membership drives, contacts newly eligible bargaining-unit employees, welcomes colleagues into UTSF, and prepares recruitment and orientation materials.
Finance Committee
Chaired by the Treasurer, the Finance Committee prepares and recommends the proposed budget. It reviews expenditures, audits, and the Treasurer’s work. The committee reports annually to the President by February 1 and provides additional reports to the Representative Assembly when requested.
Nominations and Elections Committee
This committee recruits nominees for vacant offices and Representative Assembly delegate positions and conducts membership elections. It works to build candidate fields that reflect the diversity of the faculty across race and ethnicity, gender, college, rank, and other relevant dimensions. The committee is established in the fall, and its members may not be candidates in an election they administer.
